在海军军衔体系内，舰长(captain)高于指挥官 m(commander)，commander（又译海军中校）一般担任小型舰艇舰长，而captain（又译海军上校）一般担任大型舰艇舰长。

在美国海军、海岸警卫队的军衔介绍中也能看出：Commander ranks above lieutenant commander (O-4) and below captain (O-6).
